Math Placement Exam

Math Placement

It is important that students who take mathematics begin their studies at a level that reflects their current knowledge. Placement is based on a student’s high school mathematics courses, AP Calculus test scores and scores on the University’s math placement tests, which are given on-line during the summer.

Note to Students Planning to Take Calculus I or II: The sequence Calculus I (110.108) and Calculus II for Physical Science and Engineering Majors (110.109) is primarily intended for students in mathematics, physics, biophysics, engineering, and some students taking chemistry and earth and planetary sciences. The sequence Calculus I (110.106) and Calculus II for Biological and Social Sciences Majors (110.107) is primarily intended for students majoring in the biological or social sciences. Students who complete either of the Calculus II courses will be eligible to take Calculus III (110.202). However, 110.108-109 are strongly recommended for students who plan to take Calculus III. Honors One Variable Calculus (110.113) is intended for students who have had previous exposure to calculus and are interested in a more rigorous approach than offered in 110.106-107 or 110.108-109.

If you are planning to major in biophysics, chemistry, physics, or engineering and are not adequately prepared to begin Calculus I in September, it is strongly recommended that you take a summer pre-calculus course to prepare for Calculus I.

If you plan to take a mathematics course in the fall, you must register for the appropriate course. Less advanced calculus courses may not be taken concurrently with, or after taking, a more advanced calculus course.

Calculus students with International baccalaureate credit, GCE credit, or AP credit for Calculus I and/or II should take a higher level mathematics course if they wish to take additional mathematics. (See AP and IB charts)
